Before Resident Evil: Afterlife opens this Friday, the results are in for last weekend’s contenders. What movies are drawing in the crowds this week, and do they deserve it? Read on to find out.5. Going the Distance (8.5 million): This romantic comedy has the makings of a good film. Unlike many movies, both guy and girl are stable and in love, and everything would be fine if they weren’t across the country from each other. However, it also has the Hollywood wild carda real-life couple (Justin Long and Drew Barrymore), and while it’s not quite the disaster Gigli was, it’s no Mr. and Mrs. Smith, either.4. The Last Exorcism (8.7 million): Despite its title, I have a feeling this won’t be the last exorcism movie we see. Luckily, Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel) manages to take two time-worn conceits (exorcism and a “shaky camera” documentary style) and create an engaging, if not wholly original, horror flick.3. Takers (13.5 million): Heist movies enjoyed a brief resurgence in popularity in the mid-2000s with titles like The Italian Job and the Ocean’s trilogy. Is Takers as good as those movies? Not even close. While some of the action sequences come close, it lacks the charming characters and emotional resonance that made those films hits.2. Machete (14.1 million): You wouldn’t expect a film that started out as a fake trailer for Grindhouse to be able to carry its own weight, but if you’re not expecting too much, Machete fully delivers on its premise. An intriguing ensemble cast, including Robert De Niro, Cheech Marin, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba, and Don Johnson, livens up the proceedings.1. The American (16.6 million): Surprisingly, the film that outperformed all others last week is a slow-burning character piece about an amoral assassin (George Clooney). Directed by Anton Corbjin (Control), reviewers have commented on the film’s strong European flavorwhich presumably refers to the fact that things aren’t blowing up every five minutes.
